One Room Challenge Week 6: Pantry Paradise – Modernizing Pantry Cabinets for a Stylish, Functional Space

November 6, 2024

Welcome back, everyone! Here we are in Week 6 of the One Room Challenge, and things are really starting to come together in Pantry Paradise! This week, the focus is on cabinets—the backbone of an organized, functional pantry. I’ve been working on creating modern, custom cabinets that not only look amazing but also provide smart storage solutions for every item I need.

From designated spots for appliances to smart storage drawers, I’m here to show you how cabinets can transform any pantry into an efficient, stylish space. Let’s dive in!

1. Modernizing Pantry Cabinets for Style and Function

Gone are the days when a pantry was simply a storage closet with shelves. Today, we can design pantry cabinets to be both beautiful and functional, making the pantry a stylish extension of the kitchen. I wanted to create a streamlined look with clean lines and finishes that complement the rest of my kitchen decor.

Adding modern cabinets gives the pantry a sleek look, but it’s also about choosing the right materials and finishes. I opted for durable cabinets with a satin finish, which gives them a touch of elegance without being too flashy. Modern cabinet designs can include anything from matte surfaces to minimalistic handles, which add style without overwhelming the space.

The idea is to make the pantry feel just as inviting as any other room in the house—especially since we all spend so much time here!

2. Creating Space for Appliances

If you’re like me, you probably have a collection of small appliances that take up valuable countertop space. One of my main goals in this pantry project was to create designated appliance storage in the pantry cabinets. This way, I can keep everything organized without cluttering my kitchen counters.

For my Pantry Paradise, I’ve designed cabinets that provide specific compartments for my toaster, blender, and even my mixer. Each appliance has its own designated spot, so I can easily access what I need without moving things around constantly. Having this extra storage space in the pantry is a game-changer—it keeps appliances out of sight but still easily accessible when I need them.

If you’re designing your own pantry, consider your appliance collection and plan for cabinet space that can store them securely while making sure they’re easy to reach.

3. Smart Storage Solutions: Pull-Out Shelves and Drawers

One of the highlights of my pantry cabinets is the addition of smart storage solutions. Gone are the days of hunting for items in the back of deep cabinets. With pull-out shelves and drawers, I can now see everything at a glance. These storage solutions make it easy to access bulk items, canned goods, and even spices.

Here are a few smart storage ideas I’ve incorporated:

  • Pull-Out Shelves: These are perfect for storing bulk items, canned goods, and other pantry staples. With pull-out shelves, I don’t have to worry about losing items in the back of the cabinet.
  • Divided Drawers: I love using divided drawers for storing items like snacks, dry goods, and smaller containers. They keep everything organized and prevent items from sliding around.
  • Tiered Racks: Inside some cabinets, I’ve added tiered racks for spices and condiments, making it easy to see and grab exactly what I need.

These smart solutions keep everything organized and accessible, making the pantry feel more efficient and enjoyable to use.

4. Adding Vegetable Drawers for Fresh Produce

One of my favorite features in the new pantry cabinets is the vegetable drawers. I often buy fresh produce in bulk, and having a designated space to store fruits and vegetables is a huge plus. These drawers are ventilated to keep produce fresh for longer, which means I can stock up without worrying about anything spoiling too quickly.

I’ve set up separate drawers for different types of produce: one for root vegetables like potatoes and onions, and another for fruits and more delicate items. Vegetable drawers make it easy to keep track of what’s in stock, and they add an organized, fresh feel to the pantry.

If you’re considering an upgrade, adding vegetable drawers can make a big difference, especially if you prioritize fresh, whole foods in your cooking.

5. Organizing the Pantry with Baskets, Labels, and Containers

No pantry is complete without organization essentials like baskets, labels, and containers. This final step really brings everything together and makes the pantry look polished. Here’s how I organized the pantry cabinets to make the most of the space:

  • Baskets and Bins: Baskets help categorize items and keep smaller products, like snacks or baking supplies, neatly contained. They’re easy to grab and move around, which adds convenience.
  • Clear Containers: For items like pasta, grains, and flour, I use clear containers to make everything easy to identify. Plus, they look sleek and keep items fresh.
  • Labels: Labeling each container and basket makes it easy to find what I need at a glance. It also helps everyone else in the household put things back in the right spot!

This organizational approach keeps everything visible and accessible, so I can enjoy a clutter-free pantry every day. It’s all about creating a place for everything, and with cabinets designed for specific needs, keeping the pantry organized is a breeze.

Ria's interior design expertise truly made the process an absolute pleasure. Her keen attention to detail is evident in every aspect of her work, ensuring that every element aligns perfectly with the overall vision. What impressed me the most was her unwavering commitment to communication and follow-up. One of Ria's greatest strengths is her ability to listen attentively to her clients. I really enjoyed working with Ria, she was great at taking direction and finding the look you had in mind, but any time you weren't quite sure what to do with a space she was quick to offer guidance.  I think she went above and beyond to make the whole process enjoyable and as easy as possible.

I was looking for something more polished for my main bedroom. Ria created a beautiful, custom design plan for me based on my preferences and how we use the room. Would highly recommend.

I needed a rental space decorated after my divorce and I was on a budget. Ria came in and understood what I wanted to accomplish and listened to my feedback throughout the process. Although we went slightly over budget, in the end my home now feels like "me" and is soooooo comfortable and cozy when I need to relax and decompress in the evenings after work.

I debated only giving 4 stars instead of 5 due to being slightly over budget (I wish there was a 4.99 rating), but this was a near-ideal outcome in terms of how much I enjoy the spaces she decorated - so 5 stars it is!!!

Thanks Ria for an incredible job!

Ria did a great job with my project. She was patient and took the time to get to know everything I was looking for. Throughout the whole process she was in constant communication with me about how work was going, what issues came up, and how she was helping to take care of them. She was very frank about prices and timelines, but also worked really hard to help me find the right style and stay within budget.  At first I wasn't sure I wanted to spend money on a designer, but I'll definitely be reaching out to her for future projects.
